HOFH Elite Care Center Spotlight: Sana at Stowe

By: HOFH

Sana at Stowe is a unique recovery facility located at the foot of Mount Mansfield, the highest mountain in Vermont in the charming town of Stowe. The serene and secluded treatment center offers a highly individualized program that accentuates the unique process of self-discovery and recovery using evidence-based practices blended together with impeccable service and compassionate care. Its ideal, breathtaking location even allows for a fresh farm-to-table menu in the Spring and Summer months. Of utmost importance at Sana at Stowe are the individual needs of each person, which are taken into consideration in order to customize an approach that values PEACE–Patient-centricity®, Excellence, Accountability, Compassion, and Empathy.

The team at Sana at Stowe has perfected this individualized approach, which they continuously strive to improve upon. In one recent example, a highly accomplished artist struggling with addiction spent weeks talking to the team before she felt comfortable enough to enter treatment. She had been dealing with unhealed trauma and PTSD for many years. Although she was seeing a therapist, she would often mask her deep wounds with alcohol. She had never tried residential treatment before and was anxious about it. After having spoken with the team on several occasions, she began to feel that Sana at Stowe offered a safe environment where she could discontinue alcohol and start her recovery while finally processing her trauma. During this process, the clinical team was very careful to address her individual needs by taking extra steps to provide trauma-informed care. For instance, they discovered that yoga was triggering for her, so they found an alternative with which she was more comfortable.

“We recognize that there are no one-size fits all treatments,” says Sanchit Maruti, MD, MS, Chief Medical Officer at Sana at Stowe. “Our compassionate team dedicates themselves to see what is helping the client in the present. We consider what’s best for that person at that stage in their recovery journey.”

One of the pillars of Sana at Stowe’s treatment is the practice of Nonviolent Communication (NVC). NVC is essentially a compassionate, mindful approach to how you communicate with and perceive others and yourself. The goal is to learn how to adapt a mindset that is open and aware so that one may gain insight and understanding to approach situations from a sense of curiosity rather than judgment. Instead of seeing a situation as good or bad or right or wrong, the idea is to lighten your mental load by not judging, but rather looking for understanding and compassion.

“As Eckhart Tolle wrote about in his book The Power of Now, there is power in focusing on being in the moment. What can you do right now today?” adds Dr. Maruti. “For example, if you’re an athlete right now perhaps your confidence is shaken going into the off season and your head is playing games with you, and you’re getting all that self doubt. How do you manage that? We use a variety of tools including NVC to help people step out of that place of overwhelming judgment into compassion and curiosity. We look for ways to help the individual learn how to decrease the fight or flight response.”

Another service that Sana at Stowe offers its clients is elite coaching which recognizes that high-performing individuals have a unique perspective and experience. Dr. Maruti and the treatment center’s team understand that individuals in high-profile positions like that of athletes, celebrities, and c-suite executives, have brains and bodies that are a quintessential part of their success.

“We want to get to the source of what’s weighing on your spirit,” adds Dr. Maruti. “Are you dealing with contract negotiations, anxiety because of finances, frustration that you’re not getting playing time, having issues with your agent, etc.? We dive into the present as a part of the recovery process to make sure that you feel seen, understood, and you can address what you need to be the best version of yourself right now.”

As a Hall of Fame Health Elite Care Center, Sana at Stowe strives for collaboration and ongoing improvement that goes far beyond excelling at the basics.

“We were most drawn to Hall of Fame Health because of the camaraderie. The team is as aspirationally driven as we are. We want to be better than we were yesterday, and tomorrow we want to be better than we are today,” says Dr. Maruti. “With programs like Fund Recovery, we are thrilled that we can get plugged in and contribute to a larger mission.”

“Sana at Stowe does an incredible job of combining evidence-based treatment with trauma-informed care and a personalized approach that is highly focused on the individual,”  says Ryan Cain, President of the behavioral health program for Hall of Fame Health. “We are honored to welcome them as an Elite Care Center and look forward to collaborating to help as many people as possible get the care that they need.”

“If you don’t get help when you need it, a lot of life gets left on the table. There’s a lot of suffering that can be reduced. We can’t live life backward, but with timely help and connections, we can start today to move forward,” adds Dr. Maruti.
