HOFH Elite Care Center Spotlight: Rosecrance Health Network

By: HOFH

For more than 100 years, Rosecrance has had one goal: to save and change lives. As a private, not-for-profit organization with over 60 locations, the organization serves a diverse population with outcomes-based care designed by their physician-led clinical teams. Clients include individuals from all backgrounds and situations. Their treatment facilities for mental health and substance use disorders for adults, teens, and families span across Chicago, northern Illinois, central Illinois, western Iowa, and southern Wisconsin. Among those facilities are the Rosecrance Griffin Williamson Campus and Rosecrance Chicago Lakeview, which are the newest facilities to join Hall of Fame Health’s Elite Care Centers.

Rosecrance Griffin Williamson Campus

Serving teens and adults from 12-18 years old from across the U.S. at their location in northwest Illinois and surrounding areas, the Rosecrance Griffin Williamson Campus is located on 50 scenic acres. The residential treatment center includes an on-site accredited school, a chapel, a gymnasium, a fitness center, and an outdoor dining patio overlooking the Japanese-inspired healing garden, among other amenities.

“Rosecrance Griffin Williamson is not just a sterile treatment environment. It’s a place where someone can do vulnerable work in a safe space,” says Jason Relle, Clinical Director at Rosecrance Griffin Williamson. “Our staff and leaders, many of whom have been with Rosecrance for years, live the mission in the work that they do. There is always a willingness to do the next best thing. We don’t get stuck in doing something because that’s how it’s always been. It has to be what’s best in that moment.”

In its mission to provide the best level of care possible to teens with mental health and substance use disorders, the team at Rosecrance Griffin Williamson emphasizes adaptable and progressive services. The campus itself boasts some rather unique features including a Healing Garden with natural stone waterfalls and a pond, as well as a Conservatory, a space for horticultural therapy as part of the location’s Experiential Therapies program.

“At the foundation of what we do with clinical excellence is to also provide an application of skills that someone can take home,” adds Relle. “We know that boredom drives so much in mental health and substance abuse in part because today’s society is used to high-level stimulation. We want to teach people that they can be present in a passive leisure activity and manage emotions in a healthy way. Growth isn’t linear and we can teach those messages in a different way that’s relatable and hands-on.”

Rosecrance Chicago Lakeview

Located in the Lakeview neighborhood of Chicago, the Rosecrance Lakeview campus is ideal for young adults and adults seeking a structured, sober environment for recovery. The residential program offers structure and accountability that are key during early recovery including on-site therapists and counselors, individualized plans, daily schedule and activity accountability, and 12-Step meetings. Furthermore, every resident is paired with a designated recovery coach whose job centers on smoothing the transition from treatment to early recovery. In addition to the residential program, Rosecrance Lakeview also offers an outpatient counseling center with such treatment options as Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), Intensive Outpatient substance abuse treatment (IOP), and aftercare for anyone post-treatment in both individual and group settings.

“Rosecrance Chicago Lakeview is a special place. We have staff that have been there since it opened six years ago and the facility is updated and modern,” says Matthew Quinn, Director of Rosecrance Chicagoland. “Beyond that, we look for different ways to help each of our clients. For example, we want to offer a thread between the facilities and experiential therapies. We have a horticulture program and a Japanese garden where residents can grow their own herbs, and we have an art room. We want residents to be allowed to express themselves and to allow for interpretation and processing that doesn’t rely on their strength to verbalize in that moment. It gives them a different way to dip their toe into trauma work.”

In paving the way for lasting recovery, the Rosecrance Chicago Lakeview team recognizes that the recovery journey is nonlinear and one that is ongoing, requiring action, continuous commitment, and professional assistance.

“Study after study talks about the length of engagement in services being directly correlated with successful outcomes,” adds Quinn. “It’s not unusual for someone to be a part of our programs for a year or two including outpatient. We want to embrace the idea that the length of the quality engagement causes a successful outcome.”

Instilling Hope in The Athlete’s Future

In joining the Hall of Fame Health’s well-respected Elite Care Centers, the Rosecrance Griffin Williamson Campus and Rosecrance Chicago Lakeview will continue to open doors for athletes and their families to seek mental health and substance abuse treatment.

“We’ve worked with student-athletes who were on track to get an athletic scholarship, but that didn’t materialize due to a barrier from mental health or substance abuse. Their illness disrupted their routine enough that they lost out on something that was really important to them. Mental health and substance abuse doesn’t discriminate,” says Relle. “We aim to help individuals in our programs find a level of hope and happiness and give opportunities back to them by helping them manage with different coping skills. These new skills can help the individual get back to the life that they were accustomed to.”

“I, like so many people, grew up idolizing athletes as being superhuman. Today, society is realizing that athletes are humans too, and that human connection gets me excited,” adds Quinn. “I am excited about the potential of bringing more attention on a bigger platform to destigmatize not just mental health and substance abuse treatment, but also that athletes are supposed to be superheroes or invulnerable.

“It is an absolute joy to welcome the Rosecrance Griffin Williamson Campus and Rosecrance Chicago Lakeview to our Elite Care Centers,” says Ryan Cain, President of the behavioral health program for Hall of Fame Health. “We are delighted to partner with such an esteemed leader that provides a proven continuum of care for teens and adults that goes above and beyond.”
