HOFH Partner Spotlight: Silver Hill Hospital

Nestled on a tranquil 44-acre campus in Connecticut, Silver Hill Hospital is a nationally recognized leader in mental health for both adults and adolescents. Since it was founded in 1931, the facility has devoted itself to the compassionate treatment of its patients.

Dedicated to providing the highest quality of care possible, including a full continuum of services, Silver Hill treats all of its patients on a single campus. This single-system approach ensures a particularly high staff to patient ratio, which allows the team to be highly connected so they can adapt to each individual’s needs. The treatment facility prides itself on being somewhere between a large system and a very small boutique center.

“We like to think of our programs like a utility player in that we can do a lot of things. Much like you want to beat your competitor in a game, we’re fighting against the illness and the illness is going to try to beat us, but we’re going to beat it,” says Dr. Andrew J. Gerber, M.D., Ph.D., President and Medical Director at Silver Hill Hospital. “Our goal is to tailor what we’re doing to our patients’ specific individual needs. We have a lot of patients who may not know what they need and they may need more than one thing so they need a place with the right tools in the toolbox.”

Silver Hill treats a wide variety of conditions including:

  • Substance abuse

  • Anxiety disorders

  • Mood disorders including depression and bipolar disorder

  • Personality disorders such as borderline personality disorder

  • Psychotic illnesses including schizoaffective disorder and schizophrenia

  • Treatment resistant disorders

To treat these conditions, the center offers variety of programs that are structured to meet people where they are by providing different levels of care. Among these programs are:

  • Executive and Professionals Program – Reserved exclusively for highly-accomplished individuals, including celebrities, this high-end program is a transitional living program for adults to rediscover and strengthen the skills necessary for long-term recovery and wellness. Also known as The Steward House, the 28-day program is a collaboration among Silver Hill Hospital, Yale New Haven Health and the Department of Psychiatry at Yale School of Medicine.

  • Argent Program – This program is designed for individuals who feel like they have tried everything, but haven’t found something that works. It is a two-week residential extensive psychiatric assessments and evaluation service for adults that offers a deep dive into all aspects of a person’s mental, physical, and spiritual wellbeing. The goal of this program is to provide the individual with a deeper understanding of their condition and a plan for ongoing treatment.

  • Substance Abuse Program – With a focus on substance abuse for younger adults, the program focuses on the treatment of a dual diagnosis including alcohol, cocaine, opioids, heroin, and Benzodiazepines among others. The program offers three levels of care including inpatient, transitional living, and an intensive outpatient program.

  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy Program – One of the very few residential treatments of its kind in the country, the Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) program is designed for patients with a demonstrated history of poor emotional control, impulsivity, self-damaging behaviors, and interpersonal disorganization. At the core of the 28-day residential program is a focus on emotional instability, trauma, and relationship difficulties. Treatment focuses on DBT skills training groups and coaching that teach patients how to better regulate their emotions and how to replace dysfunctional coping strategies with more adaptive behaviors.

Mental Illness, Addiction, and Substance Abuse Help for Pro Athletes

With its breadth of experience in treating high-profile individuals—Former N.Y. Yankees Pitcher CC Sabathia is just one of the celebrities who have gone public about their time at Silver Hill—the organization joins the Hall of Fame Behavioral Health as a Center of Excellence.

“Our experience allows us to see players as very special because they have unique pressures due to them being well-known, their ambition, their drive, and their expectations. At the same time, we provide treatment that recognizes that they have similar needs to everyone else in recovery,” adds Dr. Gerber. “To us, it’s all about adaptability, agility, and personalization.”

“We are honored to welcome Silver Hill Hospital as a Hall of Fame Health Elite Care Center. Their caring, steadfast, and personalized values align with what we aim to provide to athletes, their families, veterans, and beyond,” says Ryan Cain Executive Vice President of HOFH.

“It’s an incredibly exciting time to join the Hall of Fame of Health,” continues Dr. Gerber. “We are thrilled to see the progress that’s happening in sports and mental health. The organization is gaining traction quickly, and at the same time, athletes are being brave enough to talk about their own struggles and speak about things that need to be heard. Our job as a mental health provider is to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with them and find ways to make services available to those who want it.”

The HOFH Elite Care Center network provides high-quality, customized care. To qualify, the center must specialize in mental health and substance use disorder and be recognized as a leader in their respective field. In addition, each Elite Care Center must be vetted and undergo an accreditation process with a third party.
