Published by: HOFH

Located just 35 minutes south of Houston, Texas, Serenity Light Recovery sits on an expansive property of more than 10 acres. Its inviting campus offers a cozy, quiet, and confidential treatment environment where people can focus on becoming renewed and refreshed. The highly therapeutic and individualized programs treat individuals suffering from alcohol, drug, and substance abuse, including complicated detoxes, high medical acuity cases and trauma-informed care.

With a 24-hour admission policy, Serenity Light Recovery’s mission is to be a beacon of hope and light for their clients, enabling them to achieve sustainable long-term recovery and providing them with tools to create their own paths to success by extending life-fulfilling resources to achieve true freedom. As one of Hall of Fame Behavioral Health (HOFBH)’s Centers of Excellence, Serenity Light Recovery seeks to help break the stigma about mental health and substance abuse by providing a serene environment where the mind, body, and spirit receive the nurturing and care necessary for healing. Serenity Light Recovery achieves this goal in that over 70% of their staff are in recovery and have walked this journey as well.

“Seeking help for addiction is a choice that should be rewarded and cherished,” says Heather Ogburn Stokes, Founder and CEO of Serenity Light Recovery. “No matter who you are, the decision to enter treatment is one of the hardest decisions to make. Compassion and empathy are the pillars of our personalized programs. We want to show people that there’s freedom in treating your addiction. You’re not just stuck in a vicious cycle.”

The recovery process at Serenity Light Recovery begins with extensive health screenings, biomedical profiles, psychological assessments and medical check-ins with each and every patient. Even after the detox phase, the team will continue to monitor a resident’s health and vitals regularly. Whether a patient is struggling with chronic pain or a co-occurring medical or mental health conditions, or even in need of treatment before and after a transplant surgery, the medical professionals at SLR are qualified to identify and treat many medical & psychological complications that may co-exist with recovery.

“We are really proud of our medical & clinical team and our ability to support high medical acuity patients and complicated detoxes. For example, if an individual is coming in on high doses of medications like methadone, we will work with them on a longer detox,” adds Ogburn Stokes. “Our focus is on full-body wellness for all detox and residential patients. For us, it really is about treating the whole individual by really understanding their specific needs.”

Among the wide array of medical conditions that Serenity Light Recovery has experience in is Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). They accept, treat, and develop long-term treatment plans for clients who suffer from a variety of levels of TBI. Serenity Light Recovery utilizes customized treatment plans, schedules, and discharge plans, education, IASIS Micro Current Neurofeedback along with standard and holistic medical approaches to help their clients on a path to freedom.

“Whether it is impaired motor function or cognitive impairment, everyone struggling with substance use disorders deserves to get the help they need,” continues Ogburn Stokes. “Moderate and severe TBI can lead to a lifetime of physical, cognitive, emotional, and behavioral changes. These changes may affect a person’s ability to function in everyday life. In addition, people with moderate to severe TBI typically face a variety of chronic health problems. Per the CDC, 39% of people with TBI suffer from substance use disorder.”

Serenity Light Recovery focuses on healing the mind, body and spirit in a highly therapeutic setting with an emphasis on trauma-informed therapy conducted by master level clinicians and variety of programs and cutting-edge modalities to treat each individual patient. One such resource is the center’s Trigger Awareness Program, which exposes residents to different scenarios that will provide an opportunity to identify external and internal triggers. The goal is to develop awareness and coping skills in real-life scenarios before discharge.
