HOFH Elite Care Center Spotlight:Futures Recovery Healthcare

By: HOFH

Located in Tequesta, Florida,–a stunning incorporated village on the east coast in Palm Beach County–Futures Recovery Healthcare is a family-owned and family-led recovery center. Having celebrated its 10th anniversary in October 2022, Futures has a proven track record of success that only continues to grow. The company strives to provide world-class detox and residential services to adults struggling with substance use disorders, co-occurring disorders, and primary mental health diagnoses. As an Elite Care Center with Hall of Fame Health, Futures seeks to give athletes a space where they can get away from their outside stressors to truly focus on mental and physical wellness. This space is combined with an individualized focus that goes beyond a typical residential program to give each person the opportunity for long-term success.

“Struggling with mental health, using substances, isolating, overeating, etc. works for a while as a manifestation to help the individual feel safe and in control,” says Dr. Tammy Malloy, Chief Operating Officer, and Executive Director. “When we introduce healthy ways to connect, to socialize, to have fun, to assist with chronic pain, to not be afraid of medications, to attain passion, implement structure, to feel safe, and to find purpose and meaning, only then can healing begin. We help ignite and then we continue to connect them with a solid continuing care plan as this is a lifelong journey and guidance is required every step of the way. It doesn’t just end with us.”

“We provide the highest level of ethics in treating patients and in setting expectations for results,” says Dr. Gloria Dunkin, Executive Medical Director. “We treat each patient as an individual and tailor our treatment to their specific needs. Other programs tend to push patients through a standard treatment protocol regardless of whether it will optimize results.”

The Futures Difference

Futures embraces the complexity of addiction, co-occurring mental health, and primary mental health conditions to empower recovery and improve outcomes through evidence-based practice, coordinated care, and mission-driven culture. Its residential treatment center is a state-of-the-art, nine-acre gated campus containing a complete range of addiction treatment services including medically supervised detox, individual and group therapy rooms, gym, and physical therapy center, library, cafeteria, recreational facilities and pool, private bedroom, private bathroom and round-the-clock supervision. Private single suites are also available.

Futures achieves this by offering four treatment programs.

● Core Program (Substance Use/Co-Occurring Disorder Treatment) - The fundamental program of Futures, Core provides highly structured and uniquely tailored treatment plans for each individual. The therapies, curriculum, wellness offerings, private bedroom private bathroom, and healing atmosphere are all designed to help adult patients address the physical and psychological health effects of substance use and mental health conditions.

● Rise Program (Substance Use/ Co-Occurring Disorder Treatment) - A residential adventure, and experiential program, Rise is a highly unique adventure-based experiential program that allows patients who have not been suited by traditional treatment or therapy an opportunity to get a fresh perspective on what recovery can look and feel like. Rise patients have the opportunity to participate in weekly, supervised, off-campus clinical activities, excursions, and adventure experiences that allow them the chance to get a whole new feeling for life in recovery. Rise patients also receive private bedroom and bathroom accommodations.

● Orenda Program (Substance Use/ Co-Occurring Disorder Treatment) - The high-end, concierge residential Orenda program is designed to provide a fast pace, custom-tailored treatment experience that integrates the company’s four pillars (medical services, wellness services, neurorestorative care, and clinical neuropsychology). Orenda also offers an “Athlete Track” in which the experienced treatment team members work side by side with athletes to keep recovery and training on track for success and healing. Each Orenda client has the luxury of discretion along with a private suite during their stay and an Executive Concierge to provide clients with special accommodation and support.

● Mental Health Program (Primary Mental Health Treatment) - Set within a safe and healing environment, the Futures Recovery Healthcare Mental Health Program offers high-quality, compassionate, and evidence-based residential mental health treatment for anxiety, depression, and mood conditions. Here, patients are surrounded by staff that care deeply, and they are provided with a safe, comfortable, and highly structured treatment environment. The Mental Health Program benefits individuals by providing intensive clinical services, supervision to reinforce safety, observed medication management, and a supportive group therapy setting. Patient suites offer private bedrooms and bathrooms, television, internet, and a shared common space.

“In the time I’ve been with Futures, over two years now, I’ve continued to be impressed with the programs, services, and amenities we provided. We truly are a leader in our industry,” says Brandon Hamdorf, Outreach Professional and CCAR – Recovery Coach. “Futures has continued to expand its services and has created uniquely tailored treatment plans that cater to key areas like chronic pain, trauma, athletes, and first responders.”

Upon entering a program at Futures Recovery Healthcare, individuals will see and experience first-hand the psychometric, medical, and additional clinical assessments that allow the team at Futures to create an integrated treatment plan which aims to inform

their care and allows for the best treatment experience possible throughout their stay at Futures and their Continuum of Care.

A Safe Haven for Athletes

Over the years, Futures has helped numerous athletes through recovery. Specifically, the Orenda Athlete Track helps athletes of all types and any level address mental health and substance use disorders to restore the physical, mental, and spiritual health needed to perform at one’s best. The experienced care team can help whether the goal is maintaining peak performance at the height of one’s career or successfully navigating life in retirement. Orenda offers comprehensive programming, including thorough assessments, individualized evidence-based therapies, family programming, extensive wellness services, and personalized nutrition with the flexibility to accommodate fitness training and necessary business communications.

“One example of success I’ve had with retired football players also happens to be one of my star patients of all time,” says Dr. Dunkin. “He left the NFL with his mind and body in tatters. His addictions to opiates and sedatives/anxiolytics were so profound that they tested the limits of what a human being can endure, both physically and mentally. But once he arrived to our program, we were able to tap into the fighting spirit that was so ingrained in him. We started with a specialized detox protocol to address the extremity of his addictions while also taking into account the physical ailments that plagued him.

He met every challenge and in the later stages of his treatment, he opened himself up to addressing the many dark emotions that go hand in hand with losing a career that had meant so much to his life. My experience in treating this patient increased my awareness of the potential that elite athletes possess to achieve the highest success in recovery and in their lives beyond. I look forward to many similar success stories in the future.”

Among the critical goals of mental health and wellness, the staff at Futures is committed to going the extra mile in addressing the athlete’s experience including supporting each individual as they rediscover their purpose and meaning.

“With athletes, their athletic career becomes their purpose. A lot of times this occurs at a very young age. In working with athletes, it is really powerful to assist them in finding their purpose and meaning now,” says Dr. Malloy. “What is important to them now? Where is their passion? Sometimes it's art and creativity, sometimes it’s service and helping others, sometimes it is internal peace and finding that serenity and being comfortable in their skin. It doesn’t have to be complicated. When they start to figure that out, you see a shift occur. It’s why we continue to do what we do. We guide them on their path and walk beside them while doing this. You cannot drag them kicking and screaming or get behind them and push them. You just simply walk beside them, listen, connect, empower, and support.”

“We are honored to welcome Futures Recovery Healthcare as an Elite Care Center,” says Ryan Cain, President of the behavioral health division for Hall of Fame Health. “Their commitment to athletes as individuals is remarkable. Not only are their programs clinically impressive, but they also get to the heart of each individual’s journey. The team is setting people up for success not just in recovery, but in life.”
